To claim that the future is a nebulous, tenuous thing is fair statement to make. Recent times are proof of this, with the situation in Ukraine and Europe’s recent brush with Storm Eunice acting as timely reminders as to the precariousness of the hereafter. Some choose to paint an ominous picture of what lies ahead; the birthplace of apocalyptic fashion that typically uses films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Snowpiercer as points of reference. Then there are others who choose to view it through a considerably more optimistic lens, foretelling a time where the long-entrenched convention and rigidness governing high fashion has been abolished to make way for the fun and abstract. The Dolce&Gabbana fall/winter 2022 show puts them firmly in the latter camp.
Every facet of the maison’s fall/winter 2022 collection was designed to highlight this, from the cacophony of vibrant, glimmering lights swooping across the runway to the exaggerated play of proportions on typically practical cuts such as parkas, button-downs, and hoodies. Shoulders were padded to the extreme, with the most memorable creation being a red-on-red ensemble crafted utilising a high-shine, rubberised material that featured puffed-up folds along the sleeves. Wraparound sunglasses came in asymmetrical renditions, while the collars of shirts were pulled over heads and donned as hoods. Not forgetting, of course, the sweeping furry coats paired with leg warmers adorned in the same fluffy texture.
Is it likely that you’ll incur stares donning said threads in the present-day? Possibly. But that’s the beauty of it—Dolce&Gabbana doesn’t care if you do. In fact, it’s likely that they welcome it, viewing it as a sign of positive change to come where the fashion realm is no longer bound by limitations or arbitrary rules. Audacious? Indeed. Refreshing? Very much so.
