The notion of consistency might be a death knell for fashion houses constantly looking to push the envelope, but that’s hardly the case for Max Mara. Granted, the Italian fashion label is far from unchanging with regard to their pieces. Rather, it is their philosophy and belief in tapping on creative polymaths that has remained since its establishment in 1951. Over the years, fashion virtuosos such as Karl Lagerfeld and Narciso Rodriguez have worked for the label, while heavyweights within the arts sphere such as Françoise Sagan (a revered French playwright) as well as Colin Sworn (a Glasgow-based artist) have been cited as sources of inspiration. And so, it comes as no surprise that this continues to be a running theme in 2022, with the Max Mara fall/winter 2022 show serving as tribute to the works of architect, dancer, textile designer, painter and sculptor, Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
Titled ‘Modernist Magic,’ the line-up embodies the tenets of a Sophie Taeuber-Arp tapestry: poetic, playful and percolating with a dash of unexpected whimsy. Pants come in theatrically-wide fits and are crafted from materials comprising cavalry twill and jersey-backed techno-nylon; zippers and side splits make an appearance on buttery, full-leather ensembles in an unexpected daffodil yellow; while skirts harbour a regal air thanks to its full, bell-shape silhouettes. Designer Ian Griffiths also elevated the house’s signature Teddy fabric for the Max Mara fall/winter 2022 show, where its velvety-soft texture was incorporated in tunics, long skirts and even a pair of shorts—creating the impression of elevated loungewear that we foresee becoming a mainstay of the sartorially-conscious set whilst on holiday. All in all, it is a range that lives up to the promise declared in the show’s notes: “sleek modern dressing, with a dash of Cabaret Voltaire’s whirlwind creativity and a sprinkle of magic dust.”
