Since its conception in 1829, Delvaux has continuously maintained its status atop the luxury pyramid, producing leather creations at a level of craftsmanship that is second to none. From its handbag patent in 1908 being the first ever in the world to a sprawling archive that boasts over 3,000 designs to date, the modern handbag inventor has undoubtedly solidified itself as the pinnacle of luxury. Nearly two centuries worth of work has also resulted in several iconic silhouettes becoming house staples, such as The Brillant, The Pin, The Cool Box and most recently, The Léonce.
For its spring/summer 2024 collection, Delvaux tapped into the idea of symbiosis and harmony between product and art. Aptly titled ‘Mutualism’, the brand worked with talented young Belgian artist Kasper Bosmans to employ his distinctive style on several of the brand’s signature bags. Known for his unique and thought-provoking pieces that is informed by culture and history, Bosmans’s work fuses storytelling elements from various perspectives together to produce a layered visual experience. One will be quick to notice the bold and intense symbols and patterns often that permeate his art, which are evident in the bags in this exuberant collection.
From the marquetry of the Brillant Legend to the late renaissance tapestry techniques of the Tempéte Chimera; to the innovative weaving techniques that result in the remarkable Toile de Cuir and Illusion Jacquard animations; to the precious lacquer of the Stargazer; a fil rouge connects each piece to a greater story of boundary-stretching leather mastery.
Each of Delvaux’s designs are a testament to the atelier’s endeavour at excellence, a display of advanced skill fused with traditional techniques of the past. At the present, the brand has three workshops—the original located in Brussels and two in France.
Each of these ateliers are home to some of the world’s best artisans, with these skilled leather craftsmen exhibiting an unparalleled dedication to honouring the maison’s house codes, continually reaffirming its ethos through the creation of contemporary classics that also serve as vessels of art.
With boutiques all around the world—60 as of today—it seems there is no slowing down for the heritage house. The story of Delvaux, the Architect of Leather, is one of identity, passion and longevity, one that will preserve the integrity and standard of the heritage house for time to come.
