“Buzzy, individualistic, and chaotic”: those were the three words that Dutch-Singaporean artist Anna Du Toit used to describe herself and her work. A recent graduate from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, the 22-year-old has already amassed an impressive portfolio of commissioned projects over the course of several months, setting waves in the scene as one of the fresh new faces to watch.
Du Toit’s art revolves around a wide array of mediums which include ceramics, oil painting, ballpoint pen and even sculptural installations. Shares the buzzy creative of what piqued her interest to explore fine arts: “I love the tactility of art, that my fingernail can scratch patterns onto paper a pencil couldn’t replicate, or the layering of oil paint till it eventually peels off the canvas.” Du Toit’s personal style is one of uniformity and utility, made up of functional capsule pieces in an array of earthy tones and colours. Sartorial favourites include co-ord sets from local brand Rye, along with a tight curation of vintage staples. “I tend to dress in pieces that work regardless of where I’m going—I should be able to wear something in a wood working workshop and then head straight to the club,” she quips.
Looking ahead, Du Toit is looking to collaborate with others within the industry. She views the local scene as one that is experiencing its own little renaissance, expanding and merging together in many ways. Dualism is key, she notes, stating: “As a creative, it is important to learn not to sit still in one fixed practice, as creativity comes from new experiences and your work should be ever-evolving.”
