Global superstar CL is in her own monumental realm with the release of her debut studio album ‘Alpha’—and the fruits of her labour and decision to pursue artistic independence are indeed sweet. Here, in her own words, the perennial icon ruminates on key moments that have influenced her past, present and future.

On the 2NE1 reunion at Coachella
“The reunion was really significant to all of us—to each one of the 2NE1 members, our fans and myself. It felt good to finally be able to get together and properly thank everyone who has supported us for so long. I also hope the reunion gave the other members of 2NE1 encouragement and positive energy as we start to pave our own way.”

On her debut studio album ALPHA
“The release of Alpha made me feel like a real, independent artist. My songs have always carried themes of independence and empowerment for women, and this album has allowed me to really convey that message in the way that I want to. I love everything about this album and every part of it is meaningful to me.”

On finding herself
“I’ve always tried to find a balance between my personal life as Chaelin Lee and my professional life as CL, and I think I’m finally starting to find it. I still want to push boundaries as an artist and continue down my own path.”

On the 2022 MET Gala
“Fashion has always been important to me and being able to participate in one of the biggest fashion events in the world was an amazing experience. It was exciting to mix denim with Korean traditional hanbok ribbons.”

On what the future holds
“I’m always working on music. I’m actually recording a bunch of stuff right now, but I don’t think I know what it’s going to turn out to be just yet.”
