Everyone needs a little bit of whimsy. Somewhere between a silly bag charm that you might get odd looks for, a fun sweet treat to get you through the midday slump, and the odd little knick-knacks slowly building a mini army on your desk, is a little bit of whimsy. Maybe it’s just a glittering way to say personality, but, the takeover is real. And there is no better time than this summer to ditch the usual trend-chasing and look inwards at what actually makes you joyful. PSA: The anti-trend has, very ironically, become a trend.

In the fashion world, the notion is already very much apparent, with designers adding their own spin through pieces that feel a little more personal. In Jonathan Anderson’s Dior haute couture world, we saw a floral reverie unfold through floral details and dreamlike pieces that seemed like they had wandered out of a fever dream. Another designer that does this brief justice? Simone Rocha. Known for bringing more romantic elements into her designs like lace, florals, pearls and cutesy details even extending into her recent menswear debut.
Speaking of which, we see it in pop culture too. Rosalía was recently spotted in New York in a custom Yasmina Atta tutu dress, making balletcore feel like it had levelled all the way up. PinkPantheress is another whimsy princess in her own way, with plaid, her signature emotional support handbags, and stage outfits.

Honestly, the best way to emulate this vibe is to look at what you like and build out your own inner whimsy from there. It could be a piece of clothing with a little oomph, a strange bag charm, a crochet accessory, a polka-dot headband or a incorporating patterns into your outfit. The point is that it looks different for everyone, and the last thing you need right now is to follow a trend too literally. For a little help finding yours, see our edit below.
