What a time to be alive—when models of all shapes, sizes and colours are represented in an industry where beauty was once synonymous with corseted waists and size zeros. In the industry’s continual pursuit of representation, history was once again made and a momentous milestone reached when an 18-year-old model with down syndrome graced a Gucci Beauty Campaign, in July this year.
A name you need to know, and indeed a face to watch, meet Ellie Goldstein—the boundary-breaking model that caught the world’s attention after starring in a Vogue Italia editorial for Gucci Beauty, which was aptly centred around the idea of ‘authenticity’. Despite being diagnosed with down syndrome since birth, it’s clear that there’s no stopping the young lady when it comes to pursuing her dreams and being a face of empowerment for all types of people.

When do you feel most empowered?
I feel most empowered in front of the camera when I’m on shoots and modelling lovely clothes with my hair and make-up all done for me.
Walk us through your self-care ritual, what does it look like?
Get up at 7.30am, get ready for college. Moisturise my skin and put on some very light makeup. Style my hair. I have yoghurt and granola for breakfast and a cup of tea.
Why is representation so vital when it comes to beauty?
Because I want to empower people to do what they want to in life, to be yourself, and never give up whatever disability you may have, everyone is beautiful.
What would you say to your young fans, some with Down Syndrome, aspiring to be a model and personality like you?
I would say to my young fans aspiring to be a model, just go for it, never give up. Let’s show the industry we can model like anyone else, with or without a disability.
