Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), a.k.a. the newly unveiled Scarlet Witch, takes us on a thrilling journey through fashion from the 1950s to the 2000s in a new series from the Marvel Universe, WandaVision. She uses superpowers to manifest events, playing the director of her own sitcom. Key fashion trends distinguish between the decades as we jump through time.
Scarlet Witch has four impressive outfit changes in the first episode: from a wedding dress, to a household swing dress, to a chic nightgown, and finally, to an evening swing dress. An earthy toned wardrobe in earlier episodes brightens garments against the black and white film—very reminiscent of Dior’s haute couture spring/summer 2021 collection.
Amidst the comeback of ‘70s, ’80s, and ’90s styles, it’s refreshing to see Scarlet Witch showcase the extravagant and feminine silhouette of the 1950s. Petticoats or large amounts of tulle might be impractical for our everyday, but the design details definitely inspire ready-to-wear looks appropriate for tropical Singapore.
