“It’s all about the lifestyle and how these clothes are able to tell a story,” explains Tod’s creative director Walter Chiapponi in a three-minute video presenting his second collection for the famed Italian leather goods brand. For resort 2021, Chiapponi dug deep into the archives to further understand the brand’s DNA while exploring new ways of interpreting some house classics like the Gommino driving shoes and Kate loafers. He has also introduced a series of, dare I say it, ’70s geeky high school moccasins into the mix. What makes them youthful is the fact that the toe caps are raised and pinched closed with a white bold top stitch, making the whole look and feel thoroughly boyish and effortless.
Chiapponi’s wardrobe essentials, such as his pussy bow Oxfords and drawstring pleated skirts, have been carried forward from his previous collection but styled alongside oversized parkas, boxy biker jackets and quilted bombers. This is a simple collection at a glance, but there is intelligible beauty in its craftsmanship, and the attention to detail shines through in Chiapponi’s designs.
