In line with Valentino’s spring/summer 2023 collection by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, the maison has revealed its new ‘Unboxing’ campaign shot by the acclaimed Steven Meisel at the Highline Stages Studio in New York in November 2022. The campaign focuses on the idea of building a community through individuality; about embracing one’s uniqueness regardless of flaws and imperfections. With the focal point being the Toile Iconographe—assembled from repeating the maison’s ‘V’ logo—models were shot in prêt-à-porter looks adorned with the signature motif. This was present in the campaign images as well were an array of Valentino Garavani accessories, from the Loco handbag to the Le Troisième shopping tote.
In addition to the campaign, a special project in collaboration with nine renowned fashion stylists from various fashion capitals across the world will unfold. Titled ‘Valentino A Global Unboxing’, the special project will witness each stylist interpret the collection in their own visual vernacular, further solidifying the campaign’s message of unlimited diversity and creativity within the world of fashion.
Front-lining all the collaborators is none other than celebrity stylist Law Roach, whose illustrious career in the industry has landed him clients that are considered some of fashion’s biggest names, from the likes of Zendaya to Megan The Stallion. Roach’s installation sees a vintage car wrapped with the Valentino Toile Iconographe pattern, in the maison’s signature red colour. Paying homage to a 1992 spring/summer campaign shot by Meisel, Roach shares his thoughts on the collaboration with Valentino: “I wanted to create a bold space; the kind of installation that pulls you in as soon as you see it.”
The other stylists—Rebecca Corbin-Murray for London, Clement Lomellini for Paris, Lorenzo Posocco for Milan, Anna Dello Russo for Dubai, Mix Wei for Shanghai, Geum Nam Hwang for Seoul and Masataka Hattori for Tokyo—will each display their own physical installations at their respective cities that incorporates their distinctive aesthetics with Valentino’s house codes. Lastly, the dynamic sister duo of Alexandra and Mackenzie Grandquist will command the online installations, allowing for an interactive experience for all viewers regardless of location.
