It is no secret that toi et moi rings are trending hard lately, what with celebrities such as Megan Fox, Ariana Grande, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kylie Jenner all getting one for sentimental reasons. But romance and affection aside, the toi et moi ring (meaning you and me in French) has such a unique composition that jewellery designers today simply can’t resist giving them all sorts of creative interpretations.
The most classical toi et moi rings feature two gemstones set together on a common band, with each stone representing one half of a couple. As the French nomenclature suggests, they originate from France and date back to the late 1700s, popularised by French empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. Napolean Bonaparte had proposed to her with a toi et moi ring featuring a pear-cut diamond and pear-cut blue sapphire made by Chaumet.
This ring still exists today. In a 2013 auction it fetched close to US$1 million, and its style has never been more popular.

It was most recently seen on Megan Fox’s engagement ring, designed by British jeweller Stephen Webster. It features two large pear cut stones, a Columbian emerald and a diamond of roughly the same carat, set on two separate bands of thorns echoing fiancé Machine Gun Kelly’s grungy rock n roll style.

Meanwhile, Ariana Grande said “yes!” to Dalton Gomez when he presented her with a custom-designed engagement ring featuring a rather unusual stone pairing of a pearl with an oval-cut diamond set on a skinny band. What made the ring even more special for Grande is that the pearl is said to have come from a tie pin that was once owned by her grandfather. True or otherwise, pairing an oval-cut diamond with a pretty pearl makes just about the sweetest toi et moi engagement ring you’ll see.

Likewise, Emily Ratajkowski’s toi et moi engagement ring was custom made for her. Featuring a square princess-cut diamond with a pear-shaped diamond, it was perfect for the jewellery-loving actress-model who’s known to build her outfits around the jewellery she wants to wear.

But toi et moi rings don’t always have to be about romantic love, as Kylie Jenner proves. The celebrity mom wears matching toi et moi rings with her daughter, both of which feature a pear and a radiant cut diamond—although Jenner’s is considerably bigger than little Stormi’s.
So whether you’re looking for a ring to symbolise love, keen to get into the latest jewellery trend, or just want to experiment with fancy cut gemstones, a toi et moi ring might just be the thing you need.
