Ah, New York. City of dreamers, thinkers and hustlers, the subject of a thousand love letters (and some screeds), a place both obfuscated and illuminated by its sharp, shimmering mythology. Among its many odes, there is a new entrant: Strathberry’s first jubilee collection for fall/winter 2023. The global Scottish brand, beloved for its craftsmanship and sleek minimalism, has launched a cosmopolitan line of modish bags and wallets, filled with eclectic colour ways and cutting edge shapes.
Since 2013, the brand, founded by husband and wife duo Guy and Leeanne Hundleby, has been quietly turning out classic luxury bags with a certain savoir faire. Clean and understated, their signature bar closure serves as a discreet calling card for a brand with royal cachet; Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have been spotted toting their offerings, along with Hollywood stars like Katie Holmes and Vanessa Hudgens. Closer to home, their bags have been seen on Malaysian actress Yaya Zahir and local veteran actress Zoe Tay. Just ten years since its inception, the brand has become the reliable favourite of accomplished women worldwide.
This latest collection celebrates a sense of rebirth as cities shake off the pandemic fog, aiming to seize the restless energy of New York—the “city that never sleeps”— translating it into the balanced architecture and sleek geometry of its designs. Exhibit ‘A’: the considered ‘Box Crescent’, a messenger bag of slight but sturdy build, the lines are gentle yet firm and its design simultaneously classic and modern, it is perfect for gallivanting about town.
It is a tenderly attentive collection; the colour palette, filled with frosty grey tones and muted pastels, emulates the ever changing light that bounces off the city’s skyscrapers. Innovation comes in the form of the new embossed leather offerings, rendered in a lizard-skin finish and available in lilac tones, fresh olive and timeless vanilla. New textures feature too in the form of a quilted crossbody style, as seen in the classic ‘East/West’ range, giving the brand’s signature silhouette a woolly softness, while highlighting a new level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Finally, adding romantic energy to the collection is the “Cupid” print, inspired by Grand Central Station’s striking celestial ceiling. The winged images of Pegasus, Cupid and various constellations are delicately etched onto the bag’s canvas, both a reminder of the infinite cosmos and the iconic New York landmark.
