As far as K-pop ascensions go, it’s safe to say that the propelling power of a survival show—where trainees fall in line to publicly compete for a spot in the next big group—still goes unrivalled. Groups such as Twice, Treasure and Enhypen have seen immense success for that very reason. Yet the one which will remain forever etched in the hearts of the K-pop inclined just might be that of the 11-member girl group I.O.I, an immense success borne out of M-net’s competitive survival series Produce 101 in 2016. Whilst made to disband just a year after their debut, it was no doubt the locus of the industry’s greatest talents—all of whom are better known for their solo singing or acting careers now.
Out of the lot, it’s no surprise that Jeon Somi remains one of the most successful solo artists—and she’s undeniably come a long way from clinching the top spot in the aforementioned survival show. But it’s not just her candy-coated 2019 debut of ‘Birthday’ or the viral catch of ‘Dumb Dumb’ from her first studio album that are telling of her star power. As of late, the Korean-Canadian singer-rapper has often been spotted in the crowd of attendees at fashion shows and has even claimed ambassadorships with the likes of luxury house Prada. Sensational appearances aside, the singer has since decided to return to doing what she loves best with a highly-awaited comeback: Game Plan EP.
As with any K-pop comeback, a high-octane music video is only to be expected. To that end, Jeon has dropped a trippy 199-second effort for the electropop package of ‘Fast Forward’—a club banger that’s led by over-the-top dance moves and instrumental swerves. Yet she also makes sure to deliver in another regard she’s always been known for: her mesmerising, free-spirited visuals.
