There’s nothing like a potted plant to liven up a living space. By now, the benefits of indoor flora have been well documented, but from a design standpoint, plants can be a great way to create visual interest and add a pop of colour to a room.
Few understand this better than Angeline Goh and Ivan Woo, the co-founders of Soilboy. Known for their design-forward approach towards flora, the botanical studio offers a chic curation of rare plants and handmade ceramics. Here, Goh and Woo share their best tips for stylishly incorporating greenery into the home. They also pick out six plants that make a good starting point.

Styling tips from Soilboy:
- “Positioning a tall plant by the window can beautifully frame your living room while introducing a touch of softness. Opt for a plant with a distinctive structural shape, such as one with a slight arch or a curvy trunk, to create visual interest.”
- “Choose a planter that complements both the plant and your home’s decor. For plants with thick, structural trunks, a shallow pot works best. Aim for a planter that is about one-third the height of the plant for a balanced look.”
- “Create dimension by pairing plants of varying heights or textures with furniture or plant stands. Experimenting with different arrangements can add depth and make the space feel more dynamic.”
- “Plants should be the focal point, so choose muted, natural-textured pots to create a cohesive look. Neutral tones help maintain balance, enhancing the plant’s charm and its integration with the surrounding decor.”
