On the fall/winter 2023 front, the attention has shifted; with the main fashion cities in East Asia chiming in with their own allure. Shanghai Fashion Week is back in full swing—with its first ever physical showing since the start of the pandemic. Known for being the locus of China’s fashion scene, the next few days will bring with it a stellar variety of catwalk shows and presentations from up to 72 international and local brands.
Hazzys, for one, saw the colourful scape of its elevated, sports-inspired collection go down the runway, brightened only by the models walking in-step with their real-life dog companions. At Yirantian, an apt understanding of the urban woman was displayed, as sinuous dresses were cut and drafted in luscious textures and flattering details. Its celebrity-led scene was no less, with the likes of Zhang Yuxi seen on the catwalk at ordúdíordú and Song Yi gracing various shows with her presence in the front row.
But for a complete understanding of its urban style, one must turn to its eclectic street set, which displayed entire character of its own. The city remains a chilly place to be, as showgoers arrived to the shows decked out in an unrestrained variety of layers; as long, weighted trenches were thrown over an array of vests, hoodies and blazers. It was also all about texture and asymmetry as a number of individuals relied on fur coats to make a statement entrance whilst others saw the fun in playing with proportions. The sturdy boot was the preferred choice on the slippery pavements, whilst vibrant pops of reds, pinks and oranges were spotted in the sea of dark neutrals.
As the fall/winter 2023 shows continue to run its course, Su Shan Leong puts the limelight on the best of Shanghai Fashion Week street style, with more to come.
