A name that’s now garnered over nine million followers on the social media platform, Smith’s videos have doubtlessly been making its rounds—inciting a mix of admiration and flak for the way she tinkers around in the kitchen to whip up extremely complex recipes for her three kids and husband Lucky Blue Smith. Nothing seems to be beyond reach; from fresh lasagna and kimchi to boba and bubblegum—all from scratch. If there was someone that can be said to have aced the ‘romanticise your life’ brief, it would be Smith. We do have to applaud her on that front; she’s managed to transform her extremely domestic life into an opportune moment for flaunting some of the most fabulous things in her closet—and the kitchen has essentially become her runway. Forget dress codes, Smith wears her Chanel pre-fall sets, Rodarte silk bias gowns and slinky Miu Miu ensembles to her kitchen island, and she looks absolutely delicious doing it. For all we know, the insane recipes she whips up might not even taste very good but who cares? But one can’t help but wonder: how is she doing all of this? Sans making her food entirely from scratch, how is Smith achieving any of these recipes whilst looking like that—without an apron? Everytime she squeezes out a lemon, my mind automatically imagines the backsplash. When she’s playing with flour, we’re zooming in to squint in hopes of chancing upon any of those powdery specks that somehow always get on everything. And when she’s deep-frying something on the stove? Forget the oil stains, how isn’t any part of her fit or hair in even a little bit of disarray? Don’t get us wrong; Nara Smith’s content is clearly designed for a certain crowd. It’s everything a girl might sometimes aspire towards: a loving husband, an impossibly impeccable wardrobe, and full afternoons to wear them in the kitchen as she languidly charms up a full spread or cough drops from scratch. But apart from a secret desire to just hear her scream or even move around the kitchen at a normal, more efficient pace that would surely welcome some stains along the way with three children to keep at bay, there’s just something about her still maintaining those calm, pretty and pristine sensibilities from start to end that really sends me into overdrive. Because no, I do not in fact, wish to risk a single stain on anything Miu Miu when I’m trying to churn out some cinnamon rolls, much less just because my husband wanted me to. But maybe the real side of things isn’t really Nara Smith’s thing. And if maximalist glamour, date-night worthy elegance and a knack for sartorial extravagance is her tune to sing, why should anyone ever try to stop her?
