10-word show review: Nicolas Ghesquière’s heartfelt fall/winter 2024 showing at Louis Vuitton.
Designer: Nicolas Ghesquière
Location: Cour Carrée du Louvre
The vision: On March 5, 2024, it marked 10 years at Louis Vuitton for creative director Nicolas Ghesquière. It is no coincidence that a decade ago, Ghesquière’s first show for the maison was presented at the very same location, the surroundings of which have become synonymous with the brand. On each showgoer’s seat was a heartfelt letter from Ghesquière, expressing his utmost gratitude and detailing the peaks and valleys of a career that many have followed from day one. As with his run at the house of Balenciaga, the designer’s vision has always been one fused with futurism. And even as the years go on, this vision has never even come close to waning.
The vibe: Housed in the iconic Cour Carrée du Louvre, the Louis Vuitton fall/winter 2024 show hosted an audience of 4,000, half of whom were Louis Vuitton employees, to commemorate the special occasion. As visitors walked in, they were greeted by 13 mammoth chandeliers fashioned to look like looming and futuristic globes, bright and glittering. Amongst the star-studded crowd? An appearance from Blackpink’s Lisa, which caused a stir, given that it was the songstress’ first outing decked out in full Louis Vuitton. Following suit were Emma Stone, Cate Blanchett, Catherine Deneuve and Jennifer Connelly, with Straykids’ Felix making an appearance on the runway.
Signature silhouettes: Sent out on a set designed by artist Philippe Parreno, Louis Vuitton’s fall/winter 2024 collection was all about reinforcing Ghesquière’s house codes for the brand. “Having embarked on a ten-year adventure with Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière considers the journey in retrospect, with memory as the guide for imagination. In this exploration of introspection, memories resurface as a stratification of emotions, reflections, and references,” shared the brand via press notes. Some of these references? Heavily metallic and embroidered outerwear; voluminous and larger-than-life skirts; asymmetrical and poetic hems and of course, futuristic bags and footwear. Topping the lineup off were structured dresses, textured accents and playfully layered athleisure, as always, a testament to the maison’s enduring history yet exciting roadmap.
