Unless you’ve been ignoring the myriad stylish denim moments of the It-girls—or the jeans trends that have dominated the runways for several seasons—it should come as little surprise that baggy jeans are officially the hottest product of 2021.
According to global shopping platform Lyst, searches for “baggy” and “wide-leg” jeans almost doubled searches for “skinny” jeans. The most in-demand style? Levi’s loose-fit jeans. Interest in the denim style with endless skater-girl appeal was reportedly up 52 percent year-on-year.
It’s easy to see the attraction: the nipped-in waist, contrasted with the capacious leg shape, makes for a wearable and ultra-flattering silhouette. The reasonable price point also works in the style’s favour.
Famous fans include Hailey Bieber—a Levi’s campaign face—and Lily-Rose Depp, who was wearing the 560 loose fits long before they were trending. Bieber is also a fan of the brand’s wide-leg Ribcage style and its signature 501s, often teaming them with peppy trainers and a Bottega accessory. In fact, one of her favourite Bottega bags, the Jodie, is the third hottest product of the year, according to Lyst.
Fellow supermodels Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber will be pleased to hear that Birkenstock’s cosy Boston clog—the ultimate post-lockdown shoe-slipper hybrid—scored fourth place, followed by Nensi Dojaka’s asymmetric minidress, Prada’s sell-out crochet bag and Jacquemus’s La Maille Pralù cardigan.
Trainers were also big news this year. Nike’s Air Force 1s have amassed a newfound Gen-Z following, who have sparked a 248 percent increase in searches for its remodelled 1982 design. Incidentally, users on Lyst search for Air Forces approximately 4,000 times per day. Looks like the age-old jeans-and-trainers combo isn’t going anywhere.
