The show in 10 words: A heartfelt introduction to Tirados’ world which unified local creatives
Designer: Josh Tirados
Location: Figment Embassy House in Geylang, Singapore
The vision: Supported by local conceptual label An Asylum, multidisciplinary artist Josh Tirados’ show presented ‘Anino’—a collection exploring the Tagalog word that bears the double meaning of shadow and reflection. The idea that duelling polarities coexist in a single entity underscores where Tirados drew inspiration from: aspects of non-violent resistance in the form of benevolence. The show is also akin to a rebirth that merges the past and the present. Tirados, over the course of An Asylum’s residency program, developed an interest in incorporating totemic symbols into contemporary silhouettes—a departure from the dramatic proportions that he favoured as a student.
The vibe: A hypnotic soundscape created by Mervin Wong, featuring a mix of soulful strings, shamanic sounds, and distorted clangs reverberated throughout the multi-storey 1920s shophouse refurbished with eco-brutalist interiors. As models sauntered up and down a winding staircase, each floor radiated a palpable energy that reflected the ardour of Singapore’s creative scene. Undoubtedly, the words by artist Pallavi in show notes came alive: “I have this feeling that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.”
Signature style: The show’s youthful, mystical undertones came in the form of earthy hues, bucolic textures, and adornments like clay amulets handcrafted by Carmen Ceniga Prado. Tirados’ preference for the light and delicate continued with a series of crochet knits and diaphanous pieces that offered plenty of movement. Gill-cut vests styled with low-waisted tailored shorts had an air of sprezzatura to them too.
What to shop from the collection: If you’re looking to update everyday essentials such as tailored trousers, Tirados’ eye for unique pattern cutting shapes are best found on the wide-leg Sickle pants that come with curved flaps at the front and back. Versatile items such as ribbed tank tops and knee-length shorts provide plenty of styling opportunities that are suited for Singapore’s weather. The one full ensemble worth adding to your wardrobe? It has got to be the final look that consists of panelled Anino indigo denim jeans, a collarbone shirt, and a waistcoat in deadstock striped cotton.
