Picture this, you’re at a house party. And you spot an eye-catching object—unabashedly glossy and bearing a bright pop of colour. Entrancing and mood-lifting all at once, it could only be Gustaf Westman, the Stockholm-based designer responsible for creating objects and homeware that often abide by luscious curves and psychedelic hues—as a part of his funky design ethos. Surely, it’s fitting that his upcoming collection sees himself joining hands with Swedish homegoods giant Ikea.
“I grew up in Sweden. And Ikea has affected the aesthetic of the Swedish and Scandinavian. And for me, as someone so interested in design, Ikea has been so important. It feels like a childhood dream,” beams Westman who was in town this week for the Ikea x Gustaf Westman pop-up at New Bahru.

As expected of the jovial designer, the limited edition collection sings of joy and plenty of light (literally and figuratively). “It’s about hosting at home and it just feels very fun,” adds Westman. From sculptural candle holders to delectable porcelain plates, the pieces are every bit functional as they are design collectibles. Given that it’s part of Ikea’s annual winter collection, Vinterfint, which Westman admits was scary to be part of at first, the colour palette spans festive reds and greens as well as the signature Gustaf Westman shades like bubble-gum pink and baby blue. And if that had to be a favourite child from the drop, Westman chooses the pink vase that bounces! One made out of a single metal spiral and twists itself into an hourglass spring silhouette able enough to hold a separate glass vessel.
