10-word show review: Unbridled femininity with just a hint of unapologetic edge.
Designer: Kim Jones
Location: Via Solari 35
The vision: Life sized icons of the Italian brand anchored the Fendi spring/summer 2024 show space at Via Solari 35 on a Wednesday afternoon. As showgoers trickled in, a sense of excitement loomed in the air—one that can only be placed on the first day of a city’s fashion week. On the guestlist? A starstudded Rolodex of some of the Supers (Naomi, Linda, Christy and Cindy had just made their internet-breaking appearance at Vogue World) and celebrities like Cardi B, Cara Delevigne, Suki Waterhouse and IVE’s Yujin. It’s difficult to imagine that Kim Jones has only been with the maison for two years—and in that time, his vision of the Fendi woman has more than blossomed. For spring/summer 2024, this particular figure was on a Roman commute to work in all her stylish glory.
The vibe: Taking inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld’s vision of the Fendi woman, the feel of the afternoon—only further punctuated by the clothes—was one of an unapologetic self-assuredness. Not only did the models saunter down the runway to the soulful reverberation of Max Richter and Dinah Washington (so soulful, in fact, that it could make you cry), each look was styled to accentuate attitude and movement: calm, confident and centred.
Signature silhouettes: It is not a Fendi show without the house’s iconic accessories such as the First, Peekaboo, Baguette and Origami in a glittering and almost giddying concoction of neutrals and sparkling statements. Knitwear separates anchored the collection with strategic and eye-catching cutouts—but it was mostly the collection’s dresses (that came in a variation of subtly branded, silk and jersey) that stood out. The moods were endless as were their colours, from sensual browns and striking orange to muted blues and steely greys. The perfect finishing touch came in the form of the collection’s fashion accessories: striking ear cuffs hyper-stacked in the tens on each models ears; some glittering, some stark and all evocative of a halo-like spark.
