Understated, refined, delicate—though “quiet luxury” as of recent has been deemed one of the latest fashion trends, it’s nothing new. Characterised by neutral colours, relaxed but polished silhouettes, and high-quality fabrics, quiet luxury emphasises well-made pieces devoid of logos and branding. Originally a term circulated amongst fashion editors and bloggers, last year saw it becoming a trend.
From Angelina Jolie’s neutral dress collection to Mark Zuckerberg’s arsenal of grey T-shirts, luxurious basics have always been in fashion. Following the “logomania” craze of the late 2010s, the shift to quiet luxury brought the spotlight back to brands who have long been champions of this elegance. Bottega Venetta’s bags, known for their premium leather construction, have been on the arms of many a celebrity recently. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row has been a driver of the quiet luxury sensibility. Italian brands Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli are home to some of the highest-quality cashmere available, producing the most premium loungewear on the market.
Also showcased in several of this year’s television shows, characters such as Succession’s Shiv Roy and Amy Lau from Beef are emblematic of luxurious understatement. The season four premiere of the former saw a critique of one “ludicrously capacious bag”, prompting a wave of discussion on the idea of “stealth wealth”. Quiet luxury has also become emblematic of celebrity street style this year. This was seen with the superfluous social media posts emulating Sofia Richie post-wedding, and the countless articles detailing Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski-crash trial looks.
Whether you see it as dressing timelessly or as merely a trend, one thing is for certain—quiet luxury is the look to covet. Here, peruse Vogue Singapore’s selection of the must-have pieces.
