The Cannes Film Festival passed us by in a flurry earlier this year and now it’s time for the 79th Venice Film Festival to take its turn on the red carpet instead. The scintillating line-up of films slated for premiere over the course of the 11 days sets the stage for a slew of A-list actors and personalities to make their descent, for an endless stream of show-stopping glamour. The excitement is two-fold then: for amidst the buzzy films that hold the potential to draw themselves an Oscar nomination—from Ana De Armas’s Blonde to Don’t Worry Darling starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh—it’s clear that some of the biggest names in showbiz are about to embrace the high of the festival and dial up on the sartorial spotlight.
And as the opening night unveiled itself on the evening of 31 August, it seems like the annual festival is leaving us with only more to desire. As film aficionados held their breath in anticipation of the premiere of Noah Baumbach’s White Noise featuring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig and Jodie Turner-Smith, the fashion lovers were left floored by all the dazzle that shone from the stars. Smith strutted down the carpet in a Gucci organza gown embellished with shooting rays of crystals, Julianne Moore—who is helming the festival’s jury as president this year—was brimming with sophisticated glamour in a sheer cape number from Valentino, and Tessa Mae Thompson demonstrated her idiosyncratic style in a sculptural vision that came courtesy of Armani Privé’s 2009 spring/summer haute couture collection.
As anticipated, Bones & All Timothée Chalamet made quite the entrance in a backless red jumpsuit, custom-made by longtime designer friend, Haider Ackermann. Resident festival attendee, Cate Blanchett from the upcoming film TÁR, looked ethereal in a velvet Schiaparelli with hand-painted flowers.
