With stellar showings one after another, it’s safe to say that the fall/winter 2023 season left us all in awe. From the decadent collections spotted on the runways to the aspirational style set out on the streets, the season has left us all in a palpable high as we recall the reigning moments that passed us by from each fashion capital, most especially in the latter half that saw a legion of glamorous A-listers fill the front rows. And surely they were not disappointed. In Milan, they were served with Bottega Veneta’s Matthieu Blazy’s runway that surged with enthusiasm and clothes that felt unrestrained in its make. And then at Valentino in Paris, Pierpaolo Piccioli invited the reinterpretation of the ‘black tie’ dress code, where a formal instruction was flipped on its head for garments that were free and youthful in expression.
But on many occasions, the shows in Milan and Paris were ample reminders that the garments were not all there were to admire. Joining the adroit moments of tailoring and drape on the runway were a bevy of eye-catching beauty pulls—each one chiming in with its own purpose. Dystopian energy was channelled on the Dune-esque set of Off-White: where uncanny pieces of metal were spotted in crowns, contrasting against the sun-drenched hues worn on the models. On the flipside, ferociously crafted mohawk headpieces came in high contrast to the playful tones on Moschino’s runway.
There were also undeniable captures of replicable make-up looks, from Dolce&Gabbana’s sultry dark lip to Giorgio Armani’s operatic blush that spoke of elegant grace. Meanwhile, Schiaparelli delivered a mien that was still posh and glamorous, yet far removed from the high, otherworldly drama of its haute couture collections—perfectly in sync with the house’s debut of its more wearable collections.
In both cities, it seems the fashion houses have expertly wielded their mastery of the concept, ensuring that the beauty department has its shining part to play in it all. From the fascinating and experimental hair adventures to the evening-worthy make-up looks, see Vogue Singapore’s curation of the most rousing beauty captures from the fall/winter 2023 shows in Milan and Paris.
