The Golden Globes is no stranger to vintage fashion, from Renée Zellweger’s archival Dior dress back in 2007 to Kylie Jenner’s ’90s Hanae Mori dress last year. The 82nd edition of the glitzy awards ceremony didn’t disappoint, either, with Ariana Grande arriving on the red carpet in a butter-yellow Givenchy couture gown from spring/summer 1966, sourced from Lily et Cie.
Then there was Jenner, who skipped the red carpet but was photographed inside the ceremony with Timothée Chalamet, wearing a silver chainmail Atelier Versace dress from spring/summer 1999. It’s the same style as the purple dress worn by Liz Hurley back in 1999, when she attended the CFDA Awards (social commentators noted that the British actor appears to be a key reference point for Jenner, whose vintage lace number at least year’s ceremony also bears resemblance to a dress worn by Hurley in 1997). She wasn’t the only one paying homage to a famous fashion moment: Ayo Edebiri’s custom Loewe look referenced the oversized Armani suit that Julia Roberts wore to the Globes back in 1990.
Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy turned to the Dior archives for her blush-pink silk dress, while Elle Fanning—who last year wore a ’60s Pierre Balmain gown to the Globes—this year opted for a recreation of a 1953 gown by the designer, featuring a leopard-print bodice.
This year’s Globes also saw stars looking to their more recent archives. Take Cate Blanchett, who rewore a custom gold sequin gown by Louis Vuitton, which she debuted at Cannes Film Festival just last year, or Viola Davis, who opted for a reworked black sequin gown by Gucci, which she first wore at the LACMA Gala back in November.
