British auction house Christie’s is putting the personal collection of the late Vogue fashion editor André Leon Talley up for bids, through a series of live and online events. The collection of pieces—a reflection of Talley’s eccentric and bold personal style—can be seen as a celebration of key moments in the fashion industry over the last 50 years.
Remembered for his larger-than-life persona, Talley was known as the first Black man to become Creative Director of American Vogue. He worked hand in hand with with Anna Wintour for decades, and the highlights of his electrifying career are still a source of inspiration to many. The collection of items showcase a melting pot of Talley’s glamour and intellect, along with his long-time relationship with luminaries like Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada and more. As for what will be available? Sets of Louis Vuitton suitcases engraved with the legendary editor’s initials, countless statement sunglasses from Gucci to Bottega Veneta, floor-length robes from the likes of Tom Ford and an Hermès bicycle, to name a few.

Similar to many, Talley saw fashion as a form of self-expression, and his approach towards beauty and style was lucid through his extensive collection of haute couture, handbags and jewellery. Elizabeth Seigel, Christie’s Head of Private and Iconic, shares: “André Leon Talley’s fashion sensibility was singular and timeless. He was categorically chic, and the collection he amassed throughout his life was unlike any other.” Remarking on what an honour it was, she adds: “We are beyond thrilled to steward this group of objects from his homes, each lot is imbued with meaning and linked to his larger-than-life persona and legacy, which continue to inspire us all.” All the proceeds from this auction will go toward the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham and the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City, two non-profit beneficiaries that the late fashion editor supported during his time.
Below, Vogue highlights some of the standout pieces available on auction. The collection will be sold through a live sale at Christie’s in New York on 15 February and an online sale after.
