2023 has been a sensational year for entertainment, with A24 being one of the indisputable frontrunners; a source for several hotly-discussed films and television series. From the nostalgic Past Lives and the upcoming Priscilla, the studio has once again proven they are here to dominate the entertainment scene. The myriad of viewing options also gave us some of the most rousing costume designs in television, with Beef and The Idol amassing attention for the looks doled out by their main characters. Add the feel-good dramedy Survival of the Thickest to the mix, and we have more than enough inspiration from fashion icon Mavis Beaumont.
With Halloween just around the corner, you might be scrambling to put together a costume that hold just the right amount of creativity and style. Well, just by looking towards the smorgasbord of fictional portrayals this year can inspire many a costume—no matter your personality or sartorial inclinations. Might we draw your attention to these iconic A24 characters that have debuted this year; all of which surprisingly easy to emulate, with looks that can serve beyond the spooky season, as new additions to your wardrobe.
Amy from Beef

A24 is known for producing a subversive narrative, and their recent release Beef is no exception. The series follows the tension of characters Amy Lau (Ali Wong) and Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), catalysed by a road rage incident. Exploring the characters’ relationships in their personal lives and their respective growths following the explosive first interaction, the aesthetic choices are reflective of the character’s personalities and lifestyles. Amy’s wardrobe presents an artist who’s “made it”, often comprising soft fabrics, neutral colours, and a few angular touches with asymmetric silhouettes alongside her signature octagonal eyewear. Recreate her look from the first episode with a collarless blazer, her signature specs, and of course, the iconic knit bucket hat.
Mavis from Survival of the Thickest

Released in July, Survival of the Thickest is another A24 hit. The comedy stars Michelle Buteau as Mavis Beaumont, and is based on her memoir of the same name. Mavis is a New York millennial who, upon discovering her photographer boyfriend is having an affair, quits her job as styling assistant and begins to build her business from scratch. As a plus-sized Black woman, she is able to uplift her clients who too have often been the object of marginalisation in fashion spaces. Fierce, unapologetic, bold, Mavis’s closet is reflective of her infectious personality. Often in patterned jackets, bright colours, and textured fabrics, her casual yet structured outfits showcase her dominance in both formal and relaxed settings. To bring out your inner Mavis, style a graphic tee with jeans, a cardigan, and an eye-catching handbag.
Nora from Past Lives

Centred on the romantic entanglements of a Korean-Canadian writer in New York, Past Lives revolves around the Korean saying of In-Yun. The belief that the interactions between two people are the result of interactions in their previous lives. The film explores the relationships between Nora, her childhood friend, and her husband. Often clad in relaxed, slouchy silhouettes, Nora depicts a typical unbothered creative throughout the film. To get her look, opt for a loose button-up, grey trousers, and a roomy leather tote. And if you’re looking to go the extra mile, a spontaneous snip to attain the titular character’s sleek, stylish bob.
Priscilla from Priscilla

In the upcoming biopic, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla follows the life of Priscilla Presley and her relationship and marriage to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. With great anticipation, first looks at the film showcase fashion typical of the 1960s. To be transported back in time this Halloween, slip on a shift dress to go hand in hand with a pair of Mary Janes, a pearl necklace, and a thick padded headband (we like this one from Miu Miu). To turn this into a couple’s costume, get your partner to play Elvis, in a dark grey suit accentuated with oversized gold-rimmed aviators.
Jocelyn from The Idol

The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as pop star Jocelyn and club owner Tedros. The contentious series explores the relationship between the two characters as Jocelyn falls prey to Tedros’s ill intentions, and very quickly loses herself, while getting caught up with the complexities of the entertainment industry. Throughout the series, we see Jocelyn in bold, sultry and daring looks, each posing as a nod to her persona as a young starlet and a bonafide It-girl. To get this star studded look, embellish a slinky mini dress with opulent jewellery, a rhinestone purse, and dark sunglasses. Of course, don’t forget to complete the look with a smoked-out winged liner.
