The big one is finally here. Awards season, which kicked off in January, culminated last night with the the 96th Academy Awards. Well, sort of. There’s still a number of ceremonies on the European and theatre circuits to come—the Tonys, Olivier Awards and Cannes among them. But the Oscars is the highlight of the season, and celebrities typically save their ritziest looks and outfits—and especially jewellery—for this special night.
It’s been a powerhouse year for films. Christopher Nolan took home two of the most prestigious Academy Awards—his first, rather surprisingly—for Best Picture and Best Director for Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy, the year’s breakout leading man, also won the award for Best Actor for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer. And in the Best Actress category, Emma Stone won her second Oscar for her performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things.
On the red carpet front, a few trends in jewellery emerged. It’s been mounting since January, but it seems like the zeitgeist is for understatement. There were beautiful, extraordinary pieces, to be sure. But even the most glamorous of jewels were worn with a big dose of moderation. Instead of massive, matching parure sets, jewellery was kept to focussed zones.
The three big jewellery trends that emerged and solidified themselves at the 2024 Oscars? One: a choker necklace, worn high and with elegantly contained drama. Two: a preponderance of brooches on tailoring, which can really add a devastating stroke of style. And finally, the wrist as a hotspot—for either a statement cuff or timepiece.
