Nobody puts on a show like Chanel, which is why it is always one of the most highly anticipated shows at Paris Fashion Week. Past seasons have seen the French maison’s long-time show venue—the Grand Palais in Paris—transformed into singularly breathtaking mise-en-scènes, including a realistic beach, a life-sized rocket, and many more.
While the fashion industry has been hobbled this year by the COVID-19 pandemic, fashion shows remain a core part of the Chanel identity. Poignantly, this might be the last Chanel show at the Grand Palais, as the venue is about to close for renovations. “It will be the last at the Grand Palais which is undergoing major refurbishment in January,” Chanel’s creative director Virginie Viard told French newspaper Le Figaro earlier this year. “It is a place filled with memories, and every time we marvelled [at the shows]. I like the cinematic aspect of what we did there.”
Three seems to be the magic number at Chanel this season. Shot by Dutch photographers Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, the runway show teaser brings together three great French directors—Jacques Deray, Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle—and their works for a spellbinding cinematic short; three legendary French actresses also feature in the teaser—Romy Schneider, Anna Karina and Jeanne Moreau. With the homage to the famous Hollywood Hills’ sign, the magic of film and cinema is definitely something to keep in mind when watching the runway show later today.
