A kind leader and a nice leader are not the same. A kind leader dares to make waves, is willing to rise up and take a stand, and is focused on doing the right thing. A nice leader, on the other hand, is more concerned about not upsetting anyone, and fears rocking the boat.
Psychological safety is the bedrock of all interactions in the workplace, and it is a leader’s job to help foster this. A workplace where employees feel safe to express their opinions, take risks and learn without fear is what builds a high performing team. This was the crux of Vogue Singapore’s Leadership Lab.
Held at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort and Spa last month, the intimate day-long programme was presented by the Vogue Singapore Foundation in partnership with globally renowned professor George Kohlrieser, Andrew Kohlrieser and the Kohlrieser Leadership Institute. A psychologist, hostage negotiator and distinguished professor of leadership and organisational behaviour at the Institute of Management Development Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland, George Kohlrieser has spent over 40 years developing the future of leadership. He has also penned two internationally best-selling books, Care to Dare: Unleashing Astonishing Potential Through Secure Base Leadership and Hostage at the Table: How Leaders Can Overcome Conflict, Influence Others, and Raise Performance.
Equipping creatives with the essential tools to increase leadership impact and create lasting personal and professional change, the workshop examined the crucial role of emotional intelligence in today’s professional landscape, delving into each individual’s unique personal leadership style and focusing on how they can be a secure base for others.
Bringing together 30 trailblazing individuals across different creative industries for an invaluable opportunity to access George Kohlrieser’s learnings, the Leadership Lab is part of the Vogue Singapore Foundation’s commitment to making world-class training accessible for the local creative industry. With the group of participants being kept small to allow each participant ample time and attention, the programme was attended by former Vogue Innovation Prize winners such as Claudia Poh, founder of Werable, Adrian Furstenburg, co-founder of ProjectEx, and Patrick Teyssonneyre, co-founder of COzTERRA.
By the end of the session, emerging and established leaders walked away with practical tools to build trust within a team, encourage open communication and inspire others to strive for more. Through George Kohlrieser’s teachings, they gained a deeper understanding of their own leadership capabilities—and how they can forge a path towards sustained high performance to better lead both themselves and those around them.
