Missoni’s legacy has always been deeply rooted in its larger-than-life prints. Its designs carry an unrelenting timelessness ever since it was founded 70 years ago by Rosita and Ottavio Missoni. With the help of fashion greats like Diana Vreeland, the house reached the epitome of its popularity in the ’70s and eventually expanded its flourishing business to kidswear, sportswear and even homeware.
Fast forward to today and Missoni’s fall/winter 2023 collection is creative director Filippo Grazioli’s second outing for the brand, but it has proved to be a strong showing. While paying homage to Missoni’s signature codes, Grazioli has also created a renaissance of sorts for the brand by injecting a modern flair and touch to its offerings at the same time. Mainstay patterns like the zig-zag and the fiammato were reinterpreted in new configurations, coming in a multitude of patchworked, blown-out and scaled-down renditions. An archival rose motif, first seen in 1984, was revisited in the form of both jacquard and appliqués.
In this collection, Grazioli introduced a trait that is not commonly attributed to the house: unabashed sensuality. Body-hugging dresses accentuated the feminine figures that graced the runway and barely there low-cut slip dresses and sheer nude tops were commonplace. Aside from the sexier facet of the Missoni woman, Grazioli sought after a glamorous demeanour in parts of his collection as well. This quality was channelled through the bellowing, head-turning faux fur coats that were emblazoned in Missoni’s iconic colours alongside towering trench coats with textural lamé that swept through floors in dramatic motions.
