In the past, sportswear was built to endure much more than just a workout. Prioritising durability and functionality, pieces were meant to be reworn constantly—recall how Princess Diana was always papped on the streets in the same sweatshirt and bike shorts pairing. Brands such as Adidas, Nike and Champion created pieces for a multi-faceted lifestyle, becoming integral to closets everywhere.

Whilst tight-fitting, activewear sets of matching top and bottoms—you know the one—had been trending for a hot minute, it seems the vintage fever has finally spilled over into our athleisure too. And it’s leaving behind contemporary colours and form-fitting silhouettes in favour of splashy colour blocking and baggier layers. Following in Y2K’s footsteps, oversized faded tees have now become a staple, while hip-hugging capris and yoga pants have sent everyone’s high-waisted biker shorts to the back of the closet. Playful patterns and colour combinations have made their mark on tank tops and windbreakers, making dressing up for the gym feel personalised and more importantly, fun.
The celebrity set has clocked the shift too. Kendall Jenner is known for her off-duty style, and her athleisure as of late comes accompanied with track jackets that feel cosy to do life in. The recent Adidas Originals campaign sees Tate McRae sporting a retro bodysuit, a nod to the ’90s track aesthetic. The track jacket has made its way into everyone’s wardrobe this past year, from Alexa Chung to Hailey Bieber and the boys of Cortis. Brands such as MM6 are tapping into the vibe as well—collaborating with Salomon for a ’90s-inspired capsule collection featuring variations of the sporty trainer silhouette.

The foldover
Running errands after yoga just got easier. With a slouchy, low-rise silhouette, yoga pants have gained traction for their breathability and comfort, as well as ease in pairing. Mix and match these bottoms with an array of tops, whether you’re heading out for some serious stretching, or merely picking up groceries.

Layer on your tops
Known as the ‘double-dipping’ trend, this layering technique adds a bit more dimension to your exercise gear, as well as a personalised touch. Opt to create unique combinations yourself, or shop from the myriad of options that are being released today—tank tops and sports bras with an added layer stitched underneath, creating the ‘double-dip’ illusion for you.

Ditch the monochrome
Matching sets might still be making an appearance once in a while, but an increasing number of fitness girlies are spinning the colour wheel for ideas on what colours to wear together—the brighter, the better. Whether you’re considering complimentary shades, or colours opposite on the colour wheel, you’re sure to have a blast getting ready for your workout.

Retro track jackets are so back
Think over-sized and colour-blocked, with contrast piping and elastic ribbing to accompany. A classic of vintage athletic wear, the boxy windbreaker is an easy and casual addition to any outfit, especially if you’re susceptible to a bit of chill.
