For spring/summer 2021, Tod’s has got us dreaming of ice cream. Not literally, but the dreamy pastel shades, punctuated with feisty fluorescents, made us think of a hot Italian summer and the promise of a sweet, cool gelato. Creative director Walter Chiapponi quenches that thirst sartorially, rather than viscerally: relaxed hobo shapes found their way to the bags, crafted in the finest Italian leather; silhouettes for clothes were easy and light; shoes were well-crafted as always, but brought a scintilla of fun in a clunky sole here, and a Perspex heel there.
“Working with the craftsmen after the lockdown has proved an invaluable source of inspiration for me,” Chiapponi said. “I wanted their skilled techniques to be felt in the collection, as an expression of their humanity.”
The spring/summer 2021 collection—like many brands showing during Milan Fashion Week this season—was shot at Villa Necchi Campiglio, and starred Karen Elson, Irina Shayk, and Mariacarla Boscono, among other models, while Norwegian-American musician Okay Kaya performed the music for the digital presentation.
Of course, as mesmerised as we were watching the presentation, we could not help but notice the delicious accessories that Tod’s is known for. Here, Vogue selects the bags and shoes that are sure to be on everyone’s shopping lists this spring.
