This past week, the international premières of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey saw its star-studded cast grace the cities of London, New York and Paris. The red carpet looks, unsurprisingly, were full of beautiful outfits, and leading actresses like Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o dressed and draped in spectacular high jewellery. Like many film premières these days, the cast seemed to embrace the theme of their film, choosing Grecian-inspired looks that mirror the mythical world of The Odyssey.
Zendaya, who plays Athena in the film, wore a series of divine looks and an array of standout jewels. Chopard provided some of the more incredible jewels for the actress. Her now-viral winged Matières Fécales look in New York was enhanced simply with a suite of white and yellow diamond earrings and ring from the jeweller. Set with cascades of pear, marquise and step-cut diamonds, the elegance of both the restraint and decadence by Zendaya and stylist Law Roach has made it one of the actress’s most memorable looks in years.

In London, a white Schiaparelli column gown was flown for the actress just hours after it debuted in Paris on the couture week runway. Zendaya enhanced that look with a remarkable Chopard bib necklace set with a 12.37-carat centre diamond and with 76.11-carats of diamonds surrounding it. Later that night, she changed into sage green Valentino, and swapped the necklace out for a spectacular pair of chandelier earrings also from the jeweller.
At a photocall in London, Zendaya also wore a pair of gold medallion earrings by Glenn Spiro, set with ancient artefacts believed to date back between 2,000 to 3,000 years. The earrings featured a sun motif from ancient Iran, and were remounted by Glenn Spiro with diamonds, part of the jeweller’s Materials of the Old World collection.

Lupita Nyong’o, who stars in The Odyssey in dual roles as both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra, wore some incredible jewels too. In New York, she exuded a Grecian goddess look in a gold dress by London couturier Nicholas Oakwell, accessorised with an Olympia Le Tan The Odyssey book clutch. For her jewels, she turned to the Indian designer Sabyasachi—a majestic five-strand pearl and polki diamond choker necklace and sapphire ring, both designed with a Bengal tiger motif, that evoked an old world glamour.
Charlize Theron, who plays the sea nymph Calypso, chose looks that echoed both her own style and the power of her Greek myth character. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Calypso, the daughter of a Titan, enchants and detains the tale’s titular hero Odysseus on an island for seven years with the promise of immortality. That sensuality and power was channelled most beautifully at the world première in London, where Theron paired a black Givenchy gown by Sarah Burton with Glenn Spiro diamond rivière earrings that traced her every move.
But it might have been Anne Hathaway’s jewels that had the easiest connection to the ancient Greek mythos of The Odyssey. Hathaway, who plays Penelope, queen of Ithaca and wife of Odysseus, naturally wore Bvlgari as the jeweller’s global ambassador. Founder Sotirio Bulgari was a Greek silversmith who set up his maison in Rome, and so many of the brand’s jewels have an innate Greco-Roman aesthetic. Hathaway wore a selection of Divas’ Dream jewels, with fan shapes inspired by the Roman mosaics in the famed Baths of Caracalla; yellow gold Tubogas jewels with Parentesi motifs inspired by the paved stones of ancient Roman roads; and a Monete Catene high jewellery watch set with an ancient Roman coin.
