Amongst the numerous luxury houses within fashion, Roger Vivier has long stood as the gold standard for timeless and quality occasion footwear. Founded in 1937, the brand quickly rose to the upper echelons, best recognised for its distinctive square toe detailing and iconic Belle Vivier pump—a signature product that has graced the feet of countless notable figures through the decades.
Conceptualised by Italian designer and creative director Gherardo Felloni, the fall/winter 2024 VIVIER OP-TICAL collection looks to the French Op art movement of the ’60s, drawing inspiration from the mesmerising geometric patterns of the time. Also referencing its own archives, the collection was a melding of the past and present, with old house signatures such as the Viv’ Canard offered in fresh new colourways and materials. Slingbacks and pumps were given the the OP-TICAL treatment, offered in monochromatic motifs that poked fun at contemporary evening wear.

But perhaps the standout pieces from the collection are its shining array of Viv’ Choc bags, each a seamless balance of design and functionality. Constructed from a soft nappa lambskin and offered in varying iterations of striped, colour-blocked and embellished, all the bags feature a detachable chain strap with decorative links in opaque tonal shades or polished palladium, twisting the codes of a classic handbag into that of a decadent Objet d’art. For those looking to make a statement, the larger-than-life convex buckle in glistening 3D resin or chrome holds everything together as one dramatic centrepiece, and a pragmatic testament to the artisanal prowess of the house.
The brand also released a campaign in tandem with the collection, starring Chinese actress and fellow brand ambassador Xin Zhilei. A household name to many and the winner of the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Artistic Achievement in 2016, Xin exudes understated elegance and grace as she interprets the collection in an eloquent rewriting of timeless style. Pared against the whimsical backdrop of the VIVIER OP-TICAL visual—its design playing on forms of hypnotic optical illusions and spiral vortexes—the result is one filled with sophistication, empowerment and heartfelt nostalgia, all while capturing the maison’s unending desire for innovation and craft.
