With travel slowly but surely opening up, the launch of Ralph Lauren’s spring/summer 2022 collection in Singapore feels well-timed. Inspired by an archival photograph of founder, Ralph Lauren, on holiday and wearing an unexpected combination of ikat and chinos, the collection is an eclectic juxtaposition of striking Asian prints and patterns as well as Lauren’s distinctly recognisable brand of Americana. It is also an ode to the haute bohemian traveler and wanderlust after two years of pandemic mandated inertia.
Classic and timeless silhouettes were reimagined with ikat and batik prints in vivid colours and the typically sharp tailoring we have come to expect from the label was softened through the use of linen, silk, cotton and lightweight knitted fabrics. Artisanal techniques were employed throughout as well. Sweaters featured hand-painted ikat prints and embroidered details, and denim pieces sported a surprising paint splatter motif. At the same time, hallmarks of Lauren’s well-loved design vernacular by way of flannels, workwear, vintage turquoise jewelry and concho belts were incorporated into the collection, offering a dizzying visual clash that felt titillating, glamorous and elegant all at once.
While Ralph Lauren’s spring/summer 2022 collection proposes an enticing interpretation of a travel-ready wardrobe, it also offers a selection of entirely appropriate options for tropical climates. With a gamut of lightweight separates, maxi dresses and skirts as well as breathable knitwear options which can be layered or worn on their own, there’s something for everyone.
For those spoilt for choice, here’s where we come in. In another instalment of Vogue 10, Vogue Singapore has collaborated with Ralph Lauren to create an edit of must-have items to snag from the label’s spring/summer 2022 collection. Curated by fashion director Desmond Lim and featuring exclusive styling tips, here are his top 10 highlights:

1 / 10
Embellished Ruana cape, $3,429
“They say that the devil is in the details and this beautiful cape is a testament to that,” says Lim. “Featuring a hand-painted ikat pattern and clear sequins strategically embroidered on the top, it makes for a perfect statement piece for a quick weekend getaway.”
Styling tip: “Capes are best matched with more linear and pared down ensembles. Think: a fitted white turtleneck tucked into a pair of tailored denim jeans. Consider wearing a pair of heels with this cape–the extra height will balance out the proportion of the outfit regardless of how tall the wearer is.”

2 / 10
Aniyah linen voile day dress, $3,699
“With its universally flattering silhouette and striking ikat print, this linen wrap dress will take you from day to night seamlessly.” says Lim.
Styling tip: “Go for gold by stacking bangles and necklaces of varying lengths with this dress to make an entrance wherever you go.”

3 / 10
Sutton ikat print maxi skirt, $4,189
“Great length, exceptional mix of prints and beautiful movement–what more could one ask for in a maxi skirt?” muses Lim.
Styling tip: “While a white shirt might be a safe bet to accompany this striking maxi skirt, why not opt for something more daring? Perhaps another clashing print, or consider borrowing from the boys. An oversized flannel or chambray shirt with its sleeves rolled up will add an unexpected and nonchalant touch.”

4 / 10
Mini RL50 handbag, $2,749
“The straw bag seems to return in a different permutation every season,” declares Lim. “What makes the RL50 handbag a standout is its structured silhouette which is the perfect complement to any casual outfit.”
Styling tip: “Opt for maxi dresses and skirts or even the infallible combination of a white tank top and denim jeans when carrying this bag. The trick here is to keep all of that interesting texture in one spot. And by that I mean: the bag!”

5 / 10
Kory batik print silk jacket, $3,429
“A vividly printed jacket is a personal styling hack of mine,” confesses Lim. “Featuring a stunning indigo batik print and a relaxed fit, this jacket will elevate any outfit without being over-the-top.”
Styling tip: “You can’t go wrong with a pair of white pants and this jacket. Consider finishing the look off with a straw hat for an extra dose of personality and drama, or keep things simple with a strappy sandal or oxfords.”

6 / 10
Ruana striped linen-blend sweater, $2,689
“While much of fashion revolves around trends, one cannot deny the allure and value of a timeless investment piece that will only get better with age and constant use,” enthuses Lim. “This cape is one such piece that will definitely stand the test of time.”
Styling tip: “Wrap this cape over a shirt dress or a relaxed denim outfit to achieve that insouciant bohemian look.”

7 / 10
Waylon stretch linen shirt, $2,089
“Back to basics should never equate to boring. This elegant, yet rugged linen variation of a tuxedo shirt makes for a cool update on a classic wardrobe staple with its irreverent paint splatter motif and washed out indigo hue.” says Lim.
Styling tip: “Style this shirt with a pair of lived-in denim jeans to nail Ralph Lauren’s classic and effortless aesthetic. With a simple switch in footwear, this outfit will easily transition from day to night.”

8 / 10
Viola linen-blend pants, $1,929
“What I consider to be the most Ralph of Ralph Lauren–a classic white pant. As an added bonus, note the Gurkha waistband–an interesting detail that evokes the wanderlust and adventurous spirit of the entire spring/summer 2022 collection.” says Lim.
Styling tip: “Simultaneously tailored and laid back, it would be hard to go wrong with these versatile white pants. Dress it up with a heel and an elegantly cut top, or down with a T-shirt and a pair of sandals; the options are limitless.”

9 / 10
Printed cotton crewneck sweater, $2,089
“A sweater is a timeless classic that everyone should own,” says Lim. “The key is to opt for a lighter, breathable knit in order to make it work for Singapore’s tropical climate. The standout here? The electric burst of color in this ikat print.”
Styling tip: “Wear this sweater over a shirt or drape it across your shoulders for an eclectic take on preppy style.”

10 / 10
Francine ikat print silk shorts, $1,489
“Printed shorts can be potentially tricky to pull off, so pay close attention to the cut and fit,” explains Lim. “With a high cut fit, cleverly placed print and double buckles, this pair is bound to sit nicely on most body types.”
Styling tip: For a contemporary take on dandy style, consider wearing these shorts with a midnight blue shirt and a pair of brogues. Key tip: ditch the socks for a more relaxed attitude.”
