Developed through two years of in-house research at its facilities in Roccapietra and Quarona, Loro Piana Royal Lightness centres on a new textile created through the blending of silk with Merino wool and cashmere. Rather than remaining a material confined to the mill, this development is brought into garment form, appearing across knitwear and tailored pieces that reflect the Maison’s long-standing focus on fibre as the starting point for design.
The innovation exists as both yarn and fabric, allowing it to shape different elements of the wardrobe. The yarn combines Mulberry silk with exceptionally fine Merino wool sourced from Australia and New Zealand, forming a thread that requires a high level of technical precision to handle. Through processes of combing, spinning and carefully controlled twisting, the fibres are brought together in a measured construction and treated with a dedicated finish that enhances their inherent qualities, creating an ultra-fine yarn characterised by its lightness and gentle luminosity, later translated into knitwear through a highly specialised knitting process.
Alongside this, the fabric pairs Mulberry silk with cashmere in a double-sided construction produced in specialised Italian workshops. In this structure, silk is wrapped around the cashmere, giving the material its smooth appearance while providing the stability required for jackets and coats. During finishing, the cloth is tumbled, brushed and raised, introducing a soft surface that lends outer layers a subtle depth and a restrained light-reflecting quality. Once garments are assembled, the fabric layers are separated and the edges reinforced before undergoing fell stitching carried out entirely by hand. This careful finishing preserves the material’s refined surface and allows its soft sheen to register across both the interior and exterior of each piece.
