Show review in a sentence: The notion of escapism through the interesting mind of its creators.
Designer: JW Anderson
Location: Esplanade Saint-Louis
The vibe: Oftentimes when one receives a show invite, these elaborate collaterals do offer a hint of what to expect from the shows. But in the case of the Loewe spring/summer 2025 show, very little could be said about a gold ring attached to the invite card with a leather cord. At Esplanade Saint-Louis, musical scores splashed across the facade of the venue offering yet another mind-boggling proposition. A collection inspired by music perhaps? But in the world of the creative genius that is JW Anderson, we know it’s not going to be that straight forward. Inside, the deliberate inky space flares to an eye blinding glare as the show opens to a pulsating beat that transitioned into a maddening symphony of electronic bird calls.
The vision: The show opens to models in fluttery floral dresses attached with hoops hanging just below the knees. Utterly like a dreamscape; as if the garments were caught in time by a sudden gust of wind. The pace, purposive, as orchestral conductor jackets, trenches and leather skirts carry an upward movement affix to the edges. Meanwhile, casts of feathers turn basic tees and bloomers into quite an exquisite display of craft and kitsch through a series of souvenir shop worthy graphics that read Van Gogh, Frédéric Chopin and Bach. This feels like a collection that puts forth the idea of escapism through the eyes of these great artists retreating into their space of respite.
What to shop from this collection: Having hosted for the brand several seasons ago, I’ve learned that a great Loewe piece of clothing does have the ability to withstand the passing of trends and this goes without saying at today’s show. If you like a statement dress crafted in the most contemporary of manner, look no further as the airy hoop dresses from the collection is bound to make heads turn (look 1) while the simple polo shirt with an attached drape tie is able to take you easily from day to evening just by switching out a bottom (look 44). And because I am an outerwear kind of guy given they often make an outfit, the trapeze shape biker jacket is probably going to be that one investment piece that you will be thanking me for three years down the road (Look 4).
