Given the theme of the 2022 Met Gala, sumptuous beauty notes were to be expected. But leave it to Kaia Gerber to kick off the evening’s red carpet with a look to set the bar impossibly high—and the lengths even longer. The model stole the breath of attendees and event fans—and likely that of her boyfriend and gala date Austin Butler—with a partially-pinned mane of brushed-up curls that called to mind Pre-Raphaelite paintings and noblewomen of yesteryear.

The work of hair mastermind Guido Palau, Gerber’s mahogany ringlets cascaded from a neat centre parting before falling amply down her back and over her shoulders. A pair of diamanté barrettes secured and adorned the style on each side, tiny curled tendrils left loose to further frame her face. Though high on the drama scale, the texture communicated an air of softness echoed by a make-up palette of peaches, deftly countered by a power brow and pull of black liner. Add an Alexander McQueen gown built of sheer swaths and silver sequins, and the message is clear: Gerber’s own Gilded Age is happening right now.
