Gadgets, gizmos and aplenty. That’s what hair care looks like. From styling, nourishing and general maintenance, one can’t deny how many products it takes to upkeep a healthy and luscious mane. But way before things like Dyson hairdryers and root serums became a household name, came the basic and unfailing hair brush. A product that has stood the test of time and has still remained a vital part of our hair care routine.
And for good reason too. Beyond a product that combs through, detangles or tames unruly strands, “it plays a vital role in hair health, styling results and scalp care,” offers local hair stylist Ken Hong. And whilst that isn’t actually news, what’s often confumbling is the wide range in prices of the hair brushes in the market.
The name Mason Pearson strikes a chord instantly. The British brand is known for their luxurious brushes that go as high as $400, and compared to run-of-the-mill brushes that you can procure in your local pharmacy, the real question is perhaps how does it matter?

“The main differences between brushes of different prices are material, craftsmanship and the results on your hair,” explains Hong. “Cheap combs are usually made of ordinary plastic, which is easy to generate static electricity and frizz; high end-combs such as Mason Pearson use natural wild boar hair, which can better protect hair. They also implement air cushion design, which can buffer the pressure during combing, reduce pulling and irritation, while ordinary combs may directly pull the scalp and hair, causing hair breakage.” Ultimately, the more you invest in a slightly more expensive product, these combs, according to Hong, can effectively reduce static electricity and evenly distribute oil as compared to cheap combs that may increase frizz and cause damage to your hair.
Below, the hair stylist lists his favourite brushes and combs in his rotation.
