If an award show isn’t televised or actually witnessed in its unfolding by a viewing audience, is it still relevant? That was the question on many people’s minds on Sunday night, when the 79th Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

This year, the ceremony took place behind closed doors instead of being broadcast live to millions, owing in part to a February report by the Los Angeles Times that spotlighted the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—the 87-person voting body whose decisions mete out Golden Globes—had no Black members, among other ethical oversights.

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez made history
The Pose star took home the award for best actress in a TV drama, making her the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe. Long overdue but incredible nonetheless!
It was Jane Campion’s night
The New Zealand director won best director (as well as best drama) for her film The Power of the Dog, making her only the third woman to win in the prestigious category (after Barbra Streisand for Yentl in 1984 and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland in 2021).
West Side Story came back with a bang
The Steven Spielberg 2021 adaptation of the 1957 musical scored a win in the best musical or comedy category, with star Rachel Zegler winning best actress in a musical or comedy and Arianna Debose winning best supporting actress in a musical or comedy.
Jean Smart is officially a Golden Globe–winning actress
Add it to her four Emmys! Thank God the Hacks star, who’s a particularly bright spot on an already-terrific show, can finally count herself among the Globed.
Succession got some serious love
The HBO series (which we’ve written about adoringly here) won best drama series, with stars Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook taking home the awards for best actor in a drama and best supporting actress, respectively.
