What are the Emmy Awards?
The Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) established the Emmy Awards as part of an image-building and public relations opportunity in 1949. The awards are now presented by three bodies: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS). The Emmys usually refer to the two most coveted awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Daytime Emmy Awards. However, the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards and Regional Emmy Awards are also presented throughout the year. The name Emmy comes from the casual term for an image orthicon, “immy”, a camera tube used in TV production.
When are the Emmy Awards 2021?
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on 19 September 2021 from 5pm local time in Los Angeles (8am on 20 September in Singapore).
Where will the Emmy Awards 2021 be held?
The 2020 Emmys, dubbed the “Pand-Emmys”, were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, with winners accepting their statuettes remotely via video link. This year, despite plans to host a modified in-person ceremony inside the Microsoft Theater, rising Covid case numbers in California have prompted the Academy to move the show to the Event Deck at LA Live, which is directly behind the theatre. “This will provide an opportunity to utilise an indoor/outdoor setting and more socially-distanced audience seating,” the Academy said in a statement.
They also added that, “Following discussions with health and safety experts for Los Angeles County, the Television Academy has concluded that we must further limit the number of nominees attending the [ceremony]. Although invitations have just been mailed out, nominated teams of three or more will now be limited to no more than four tickets per nomination. Unfortunately, this means not all nominees will be able to attend this year’s awards.” As a result, both the ceremony and the red carpet may seem more muted than in previous pre-pandemic years.
Who will host the Emmy Awards 2021?
Comedian Cedric the Entertainer will serve as the host while presenters on the night are set to include Jennifer Coolidge, Beanie Feldstein, Sarah Paulson, Amy Poehler, Billy Porter, Tracee Ellis Ross and Kerry Washington, as well as Schitt’s Creek’s Daniel Levy, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy and Catherine O’Hara who all took home awards last year.
