Arguably, there are plenty of ways to interpret this year’s Met Gala dress code. Titled “The Garden of Time”, it is in reference to a fable written by J.G. Ballard which centres around a count that attempts to hold off an angry mob from storming his castle utilising roses that stop time. To be literal about it is to adorn yourself in floral motifs—Laufey sported a ruffled, off-the-shoulder number with a pink bloom pinned ostentatiously to the bust area; the train of Kerry Washington’s deep violet gown featured a cascade of flowers; while Cynthia Ervo opted for a deconstructed take with scattered petals. Amidst all the nature-inspired imagery, however, emerged a surprising beauty take: darkly romantic, goth make-up that paid homage to the dystopian theming present within the story.
Celebrities that were a part of this movement include Met Gala 2024 special correspondent, Emma Chamberlain, who showed up in a moody, chocolate smokey eye and lace-entwined talons. Zendaya, too, turned heads with pencil-thin arches and a deep cherry-toned eyeshadow. Then there was Charli XCX with a sculptural spiked mane that that served as the perfect complement to pitch-black lipstick, smudged grey eyeshadow, and bold arches. And of course there was Amelia Gray with her vivid magenta lip that was accompanied by sleek, shower-fresh tendrils that trailed down to her neck. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
