Long before Korean fashion icons such as BTS and Blackpink we know and love today, there was Kwon Ji-yong. Better known by his moniker G-Dragon, the leader of K-pop sensation BigBang, has been an unrelenting force in both the music and the fashion scene, as the pioneering Korean celebrity and first Asian man to be named a Chanel ambassador. Since his debut with the group almost two decades ago, the singer has made headlines for displaying avant-garde and at times, androgynous looks, each executed with his signature nonchalance and magnetism, that often left news outlets and fans alike entranced.
Though the early aughts of the K-pop realm has been known to be experimental—sometimes even campy—in style, G-Dragon remains untouched in terms of range. He has done it all, from a punk-rock look with fur, chains and attitude to match in the music videos of his 2013 solo album, Coup D’etat, to Chanel tweed jackets (womenswear, in fact), berets and powder blue co-ords when attending Paris Fashion Week 2020. A shapeshifter in fashion, his style perpetually transposes, favouring oversized fur hats one day and sequinned blazers the next, leaving shoes too big to fill during his long break from the public eye.
Fast forward to present day, the South Korean artist has entered a new era of his artistry. From the unexpected drop of the ‘Power’ MV late last October to a full album release in the vein of Übermensch, the veteran idol has been biding his time in the limelight once again—and not without making sartorial impact whilst he’s at it. Amid his comeback season, there have been two veritable Chanel show sightings, a few casual jaunts halfway across the world to Paris and an insurmountable number of suave appearances at variety shows or art fairs. In celebration of his musical return and our March ‘Vigour’ issue, Vogue Singapore rounds up G-Dragon’s most stylish ensembles—and we’re talking the ones beyond his multitude of stage and music video looks—that prove why he is a cut above the rest in style.
