Salvatore Ferragamo may be one of the biggest names in luxury fashion today, but its founder had humble beginnings. During the economic boom in the 1950s, Ferragamo became a “shoemaker to the stars”, working with icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe, in particular, was a fan of Ferragamo’s pieces—especially the Filetia and Viatica pumps—and frequently wore them in her films.
Despite having a four-inch heel, both models were purportedly comfortable, thanks to the bespoke wood and steel heel Ferragamo had patented for the starlet. But it wasn’t until 1978—18 years after Ferragamo’s death—that the Vara pump, the house’s most storied shoe, was born. Featuring a modest three-centimetre heel, a grosgrain bow and a metal bar, the model has been well-loved ever since for its versatility and timelessness.

Today, the Vara pump has been updated in countless reiterations, the most recent being the multicoloured woven raffia version featured in Ferragamo’s spring/summer 2022 collection. The line-up also consists of the popular Varina ballet flat in a similar make for maximum comfort as well as statement-making mules, clogs and slides.
Along with the line’s wide selection of footwear, the label will be debuting the brand-new Ferragamo cage bag, a playful yet functional option to tote your belongings on your next trip. The crowd-favourite classics, the Trifolio and Ferragamo Studio bags, have also been given a revamp in saccharine candy-like hues and different sizings. Look forward to breezy ready-to-wear pieces as well, including pleated mini-dresses, tailored trousers and silk scarves printed with Ferragamo’s archived floral designs.
