When Silvia Venturini Fendi presented functional charms, AirPod cases and digital watch holders for autumn/winter 2020 in collaboration with Chaos, she couldn’t have known such buzzy accessories would become ever more appropriate in a global pandemic. For spring/summer 2021, Chaos founders Charlotte Stockdale and Katie Lyall were tasked with reimagining a series of “precious essentials with an attitude”, the duo tells British Vogue.

Ramblers will be pleased to hear that this year’s picnic craze is by no means over—a selection of woven hampers featuring glove clips, water bottle holders and rolled-up blankets made it onto the Fendi runway, as did delicate doily purses and wicker clutches. Phone cases, lighter holders, leather lunch boxes, belt charms and shot glasses also featured; styled with similarly practical clothing and footwear (socks and sandals people, get into it).

The key inspiration behind the fresh, functional necessities? “Home and family”, say Katie and Charlotte—pertinent considering the isolation and separation this year has brought. Their moodboard reflected the familial influence of the whole Fendi show – Silvia Venturini Fendi’s last as artistic director of womenswear before she hands the reins to Kim Jones.

A celebration of the brand’s storied heritage, the unisex collection nodded to all things Italian. “I wanted to start with the most basic fabric; the most ancient one, which is linen,” Venturini Fendi told British Vogue. “It’s also good for the moment, because it’s totally sustainable.”
