Call us optimistic or perhaps just naive—but we’d like to believe that despite the inherent grim dark quality of the cyberpunk genre, there is still some beauty to be mined from this specific form of dystopia. Defined as a sub-genre of science fiction that takes place within the cybertronic age, it coalesces futuristic achievements with the decay of civilisation, whereupon the advent of technology brings forth unforeseen societal upheaval. Think bioengineered humanoids from Blade Runner; the stimulated reality that is the crux of The Matrix; and even memory-altering gizmos à la Strange Days.
“Classic cyberpunk characters were marginalised, alienated loners who lived on the edge of society,” states Lawrence Person, prolific writer and editor behind Hugo-nominated science fiction magazine, Nova Express. “They lived in generally dystopic futures where daily life was impacted by rapid technological change, an ubiquitous data-sphere of computerised information, and invasive modification of the human bodies.”
Bearing this in mind, it stands to reason that aesthetics are typically foregone for practicality in the cybertronic age. Still, that’s not to say that there is no room for individuality and play when it comes to one’s hair and make-up choices—even during the most dire of times. Vogue Singapore explores this notion with renowned digital artist, Bruno Irace, through a showcase of stunning imagery that incorporates fantastical elements, bio-modified enhancements, and more.
