As the adage goes: beauty is pain, pain is beauty. This rings true to the extensive efforts we often make for the sake of our skin. Whether it be in the form of invasive or non-invasive aesthetic procedures or simply the long list of skincare and make-up products we have in our arsenal, the price of beauty isn’t a small one. But recently, something my facialist quipped mid-procedure sent off immediate warning bells—“if you don’t exfoliate, no amount of skincare will work for you.”
Perhaps, it’s a common misstep in the humdrum of it all; a simple non-negotiable that could compromise the thousand-dollar routine that we’ve cultivated for ourselves. Dr. Stephanie Ho, consultant dermatologist at Stephanie Ho Dermatology offers: “Not exfoliating can lead to a buildup of dead skin cells, resulting in dullness, rough texture, clogged pores, and more frequent breakouts. It can also reduce the effectiveness of your skincare products, since they have to work through that extra superficial layer.”
This, naturally trickles down to our make-up. “If you’re not well exfoliated, your skincare wouldn’t absorb well, which can easily lead to dehydration and cause your skin to over produce oils,” shares local make-up artist Vic Hwang. “Especially in our humid weather, you may think using a super matte foundation and setting with powder is the only way to keep your skin balanced throughout the day, but actually it starts with a proper skincare routine.”
Just like any other skincare step, there are variants in exfoliants. Those with more targeted skin concerns, chemical exfoliants will probably serve you better—based on the type of acid and strength of acid. Ho explains: “AHAs such as glycolic acid are strong and penetrate deeper to boost collagen production, smooth fine lines, and brighten uneven skin tone. It’s ideal for sun-damaged or aging skin. Mandelic acid is an AHA that is gentler and anti-inflammatory, making it perfect for sensitive, acne-prone, or rosacea-prone skin while still improving texture and clarity. Salicylic acid is a popular BHA that is oil soluble, allowing it to penetrate deeper into pores and is particularly effective for oily or acne prone skin, unclogging pores and reducing inflammation.”
