Checks are back in the mix, again. Think of them as fashion’s comfort pattern: familiar enough to build an outfit around, and with the print showing up on everything from micro minis to boxy jackets to playful accessories, it’s safe to say we’re entering the check-on-check era.
On the runways alone, the wave was unmistakable. At COS’ fall/winter 2025 show, the buzzy matching set—a checked top and matching draped checked skirt—stood out instantly. Dior’s spring/summer 2026 runway marked Jonathan Anderson’s first womenswear collection for the house, and checks became part of his opening thesis, including a rich green checked dress paired with a folded hat. And at Acne Studios’ spring/summer 2026 show, plaids appeared in multiple variations, culminating in a standout combination: a bright yellow grunge-leaning plaid button-up paired with a brown sheer skirt and topped with a muted coat draped over one shoulder.

The fun part? Styling them. If you’re going full send, plaid-on-plaid is absolutely fair game. Match scales for a cleaner finish, or mix them up if you’re aiming for a little visual clash. Another favourite way to wear them is through skirts—every length is in play: micro minis with tights and loafers, midis with fitted tees, or sweeping silhouettes paired with soft knits for a dressier option. Outerwear like jackets can also add a fun bit of eye candy to any outfit. Tops—sheer pieces, casual plaid shirts and dresses—are a simple but foolproof way to incorporate the pattern too.
Accessories make for easy entry points too, like a check-print belt—Lisa-approved, as she styled her Louis Vuitton rendition at the brand’s spring/summer 2026 show. Or keep it uber simple with a gingham scrunchie to top things off, and for a more utility-focused option, a warm scarf will take you through the chilly rainy days in style
