Show review in a sentence: A subtle nuance that treads the line between contemporary and evergreen
Designer: Karin Gustafsson
Location: Greenpoint terminal warehouse, Brooklyn, New York
The vibe: COS embraced a markedly smaller-scale setting this season—a sharp contrast to its last show, staged in the grandeur of a historic marble quarry in Athens. Inside the open warehouse, washed entirely in ivory, the collection opened with a midnight-blue peacoat cut wide to reveal the décolletage. From there, ’90s nubbly outerwear gave way to a series of check-on-check ensembles in the richest shades of cocoa, a palette that injected a promising jolt of personality into the otherwise tonal line-up.
The vision: Gustafsson’s designs stayed true to the brand’s backbone of timelessness. Cuts and drapes were intentional and precise, while the palette remained within a restrained spectrum of greys, mocha, cocoa, thyme and the occasional flash of burgundy. A personal standout was a draped dress that enveloped the body with sensual ease, leaving an impression long after the finale. The streamline oxfords crafted for both men and women proved especially handsome when paired with fluid shifts and cinched-in suits while the occasional introduction of sheer fabrics, bodysuits and daisy dukes lent a seductive counterpoint to an otherwise fabric-dense, construction-driven collection.
What to shop from this collection: Despite it being a collection that might feel a touch heavy for our local climate, there were plenty of standout separates in today’s presentation with pieces that would seamlessly slip into any wardrobe. Take Look 7, a check-on-check bodysuit that would pair beautifully with brown coupe carotte pants or stone-wash denim. Then there was Look 15, a sleeveless burgundy shift with side vents that teases the eyes ever so slightly with a turn of the body. Look 40, the elegant draped dress, felt thoroughly of-the-moment when styled not with heels, but with a pair of monk straps. And finally, for those seeking the perfect outerwear this winter, a heather-grey cocoon-shaped coat, cropped just above the wrist stood out as an instant style upgrade, especially when paired alongside travel essentials of slinky knits and straight-cut denims.
